Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 Magazine Front Cover Analysis
The magazine cover that I'm going to look at now is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1. It was released in 2010 and its genre is fantasy. It is the second last movie of the sequel in which was inspired by J.K. Rowling. Straight away, the fantasy can be identified through the wand that Harry potter is holding. This is because wands tend to be associated with fantasy films. Furthermore the unique selling point is shown through the name "Harry Potter" being in a different colouar as it's yellow whilst the rest of the text is white. This is a Unique selling poing because of the huge success of the other Harry Potter movies and the book sequels as well.
The aspect which makes this magazine cover stand out to the others that I have analyzed is the fact that it looks as if we are looking down at the central image which is Harry potter and so the angle that the the picture is shown adds another dimension to the magazine and gives a lot of information about the storyline. What I had learnt in my first year of media studies is that using a high angled shot such as this tells the audience that he is facing a struggle. For this cover, it tells me that he will be fighting a losing battle and facing creatures that are much bigger than him. This means that the angle of this shot also emphasizes the fantasy genre once again. Furthermore, the background cosists of different shades of blue which makes it look gloomy and also adds to the fantasy genre. Harry Potter is looking directly at the audience with a wand in his hand which may connote that ha can't trust anyone and makes the audience feel as if the are the villains. The idea that he can't trust no-one is shown as he is on his own and the biggest piece of text states that "the end is near."
The Harry Potter movies could be seen by kids but this magazine front cover tells me that this movie will be much more mature. This is through Harry Potter looking rather beaten up which shows that there could possibly be more action in this movie as opposed to the children aspects that were shown in the other films. This cover ultimately tells me how to change the perception of a film and change the target audience as this one feels like a much mature audience. I say this because the harry potter movies were very much in my generation whereby the first one appealed to me so as they were growing up, so was I. This means that if they kept on just targeting children, then it could get risky as Happy Feet 2 shows whereby it was seen as a huge flop because the audience who had watched the first one had grown up and so they released it to an audience that had no knowledge of the movie and this was down to them releasing it too late.
Overall, this cover has taught me how to keep the concept of a movie fresh and how to aim it at your target audience. This is a helpful cover to refer back to just to see how they have tried to bring their target audience in. Furthermore, I have learnt about how different angles can make the magazine cover look different to others as it makes it stand out more.

Captain America Trailer and Magazine Cover Analysis
Captain America "The first Avenger" was released in 2011 and made $370,500,000 in the box office thus showing that it was a huge success. This may have been to the high anticipation of the avengers movie which was released soon after this movie. The title is a unique selling point in its own right as it tells the audience that they must watch this movie in order to understand the avengers movie. I have noticed that Marvel Comics movies always shun out their unique selling point as much as possible as they have a lot to choose from. This is something I realized from my Spider-Man analysis.
The trailer starts with predominantly fade shots to establish the location, character and set the pace of the trailer. This is also done with the non-diegetic sound in the background which starts off slow to compliment the fade shots. We also witness a very powerful shot/reverse/shot to establish the main character during the conversation. The camera also slowly zooms into him for the audience to identify that he is in fact the main character.
The sound really starts to pick up pace after the 50 second mark to signify a change in pace. This shows how important sound is to dictate the pace of a trailer. It is really at the last 30 seconds where we witness the sound at its highest level. The sound in this trailer changes pace a lot throughout the trailer as well as the volume of the non-diegetic sound in the background. This may be because they want to ensure that the audience identifies main pieces of dialogue but also to follow the pace of the trailer via complementing the camera shots.
Here is the front cover of empire magazine for captain America. It was released in 2011 and is one of the marvel characters thus is already quite well known. The genre of the movie is an American Superhero as well as action. Other successful movies associated with this genre is Spiderman and the Fantasic Four. Both of these films are also marvel characters which shows how much Marvel dominate this genre. One thing that I have identified is that magazine covers don't shun off this unique selling point and this may be because they don't want to insert any unnecessary information.
Straight away, I identify a common feature of both magazines and posters which is directly addressing the reader via the centralised image looking directly at the reader and drawing their attention. The background is a picture of a slightly burnt American flag and is put there to relate to the title of this movie "Captain America." This actually gives the audience an slight idea of the storyline as it tells the audience that he is fighting for his country.
Captain America looks a bit scruffy as well and it tells the audience that he is going to be involved in a fight which relates to the caption "How Summers Biggest Superhero Went To War" and so it really tells the audience the genre of this movie. For this reason, I feel that this Magazine cover goes give away a lot of information to the audience and.
This magazine cover does have a unique selling point which is that they are subtly promoting their next movie. Furthermore, this is telling the audience that they must watch this movie in order to understand the Avengers movie.
Overall, This magazine cover tells me that you can have a lot of information in the poster without much writing. Furthermore, I found that they do show one of their unique selling points but doesn't show the fact that it is a Marvell movie yet adds interest to another movie that they are releasing.

The Hobbit poster Analysis
This poster is for the Hobbit which was released in 2012. There is only one centralised image which thus gives all its prevalence to this image. The central image in this specific poster is the character Gollum who is staring directly at the audience which will catch the audiences attention. Furthermore they have really made this poster look as if it's 3D as Gollum's head is in front of the empire sign. Moreover Gollum is pointing towards the audience which seems like an effective way in which to directly communicate to the audience.
The second feature of this poster is the background which looks very dark. The lighting as a whole is also very dark. You can just about make out that there is a forest in the background but this is irrelevant. The reason I believe that they made the background so dark is because it gives more emphasism on the centralised image and so makes it stand out even more.
They try to keep the writing to a minimum in this poster which is different to most magazine covers which tries to sell it self via packing as much information as possible. I feel this is because the magazine front covers ultimately have one purpose which is to sell the magazine whereas posters are there to be kept so any unnecessary information is kept out. This is also shown in this poster. The text used are in different fonts and sizes but The Hobbit logo is the biggest piece of text in the poster apart from obviously the empire logo but even this is partially covered up which makes the hobbit logo stand out even more.
His eyes also stand out in this poster as his pupils are blue with a black background and is making the audience focus on the the facial expression that he is making. This poster makes him look evil and I feel that his eyes are a huge reason for this. Moreover, his teeth also makes him look evil as he is missing some teeth and his teeth are shown as sharp and thus is perceived as dangerous.
The genre of this film is Fantasy/Adventure and it can be seen through the mysterious background which emphasises the fantasy aspect. In the background, we also see some type of trees or a cave. This is not seen in everyday life and thus shows the Adventure aspect of the poster. The target audience is also being drawn it through the level of mysteriousness associated with this poster. This teaches me how effective a plain colour such as black can connote so much different information.
Overall, what I have learnt from this poster is the fact that pictures are much more important than text. I have learnt that minimal text is more effective in a poster as it emphasises the image. This poster has helped me identify the purpose for a poster which is to hang it up and thus is more for the artwork than writing.

Hellboy 2 Magazine Front Cover
The first thing I will talk about is the title "Hellboy." The first thing we associate with hell is fire and the fact that the title is on fire re-enforces this. The empire logo as shown below is similar in the sense of font and colour but the fire is specific to this copy of empire magazine.
The Main picture of Hellboy is emphasised through a black background. This really makes Hellboy and and the Empire logo stand out. Furthermore, his posture tells the audience that this movie is of an action genre as he is clenching his fists right in the middle of the cover so it will be the first thing that the audience will see. Moreover you can see that one arm is bigger than the other and this is the one which is clenched which shows that this is the hand which he does most of his fighting.
Hell is also associated with death and the devil. This character has similar characteristics of the Devil but also has other characteristics of a man. One of these that I can identify is the difference in hand sizes. The hand on the right looks like the size of an average male and the hand on the left looks like an aliens. Furthermore, devil are know to have horns on their heads but his only has the foundations which suggests that he isn't a complete devil. Moreover, the fact that he has facial hair is anything like what a devil would have and shows his human qualities.
Looking in more detail to this specific magazine cover, this character covers the majority of the page and so the audience will not be able to miss him. This tells me the importance of one central image. There is also minimal writing which adds more emphasism on the picture itself. Furthermore it seems as if this character is directly addressing the audience as he is looking at us. He looks aggressive which is supported by him clenching his fists which I have talked about earlier. This adds to the aggression along with his facial features.
The target audience is male and are in their late teens who are looking for an action genre film. this target audience is brought in by the fire in the background and Hellboy's pose which makes you feel that there will be action in this movie. Furthermore, the black background really emphasises the fire and makes it stand out even more. This teaches me how colours can be seen to stand out more with a plain, black background.
We obviously witness a barcode in the bottom left of the Magazine front cover. I have noticed this as one of the characteristics in all of the magazine front covers in which I have analysed. It should take as minimal space as possible and I have noticed that it tends to be found on the bottom right or left of the magazine cover. This has taught me that we should put our barcode in a place that tries its best not to catch the audiences attention thus putting more attention on the central image.
Overall, This front cover is the first that I have analysed and it has taught me a fair bit. Firstly it tells me about how a simple magazine cover can be most effective and how it can give off more of an message. Furthermore having one centralized picture helps getting a simple magazine cover. Moreover, directly addressing your audience via having this centralised image looking directly at the audience. This will gain more attention from the audience and ultimately makes it more interesting.
Batman - The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Analysis
The Dark Knight Rises was released in 2012 and gained a rating of 8.8/10 from IMDB which just shows its success. It had a budget of what is believed not to be more than $300 million and made a huge net profit of roughly $700 million which is the biggest net profit of a movie that I have analysed plus this has spent the most for a movie. The genre of this movie is a Superhero Action movie and is the final movie of this specific Batman trilogy.
The film distribution company of Warner Brothers is shown straight away with one of the many unique selling points which is the logo of DC Comics. This tells me that the storyline is getting introduced straight away. We see a boy singing the national anthem but the fascinating thing about this is the way in which it changes from the primary to the secondary sound when Alfred starts talking to a young Bruce Wayne. There is also a tertiary Non-diegetic sound in the background which means that there is a lot of information that your ears are taking in.
The lighting is very dark for the majority of the trailer showing that it's going to be a dark movie and it also follows the idea that Batman as associated with the dark. The establishing shot near the beginning of Gothem City is even at night time. This is also telling the audience that Gotham City is going to be in a lot of trouble in this movie.
This movie tries not to give much away and this is evident by the fact that we only witness Bruce Wayne as Batman on only three occasions and each on lasts for less than two seconds. I feel as if this trailer tries to show the huge task that Batman is facing as most prevalence is shown on Bane which is really telling the audience that Batman is fighting a losing battle. Even when Batman is shown as Bruce Wayne, the camera is looking down at him and in one of the shots, he is bleeding which connotes that he is weak and that Bane is stronger. Plus, the fact that we see Batman to such a minimal extent, tells me that the storyline will be based around the face that Batman will be no longer yet Bruce Wayne is shown so it is telling us that this will be the end of Batman.
The scene which is emphasised the most is this trailer is in the American football Stadium whereby the scene is split up into different sectors of the trailer. The national anthem sung by the little boy is in the stadium and so is the collapse and I'd really the only piece of action that we witness. This trailer is quite slow and even the action scenes still feel slow. This is one thing that this trailer has done well. It has still been able to control the tempo of the trailer even if they used quite intense action scenes.
I have already talked about one of the unique selling points which was DC Comics but the other one was the fact of their huge success, huge reputation and huge star studied line-up. A movie which I have analyzed and had similar attributes in terms of its unique selling point is the Hangover part 3. The line up for this movie helps appeal to a wider audience as Alfred is a British actor and Christopher Nolan is also known worldwide even before his Batman career with movies such as the prestige.
The batman Logo relly tells the name of the title as much as the title it self. This is why we titness the batman logo just prior to the actual title. It feels as if we are falling into the logo which will raise the adreneline of the audience and gain their attention which will help them remember the title. we see a cream background with a black font. The title doesn't include the name "Batman" as it is not required due to the magnitude of success of the other Batman movies. The black font really stands out with the help of the background. "Rises" is the biggest word within the title and thus gains most prevelence. This may be because it can tell the audience a lot about a struggle that he may have been facing and gets the audience guessing.
Overall this trailer has taught me how to dictate the pace of the trailer through lighting and sound. Furthermore it has taught me how we can emphasize one specific scene by splitting it up into different sections. This will make it less harder and time consuming when we are filming our trailer. Moreover this trailer has taught me how to add emphasism of one specific word via making it bigger and thus adding more prevelence.
Shutter Island Trailer Analysis
Shutter Island was released in 2010 and got a huge rating of 8/10 from IMDB. It had a budget of $80 million and mad a net profit of $210 million which also shows the success of the movie. The genre of this movie is a Psychological Thriller which is very rare to find.
Straight away, the film distribution company "paramount," is shown straight away which tells me that the storyline is introduced straight away. The non-diegetic music is also alongside the film distribution company at the beginning of the trailer which is very slow paced and supports the very first scene that we witness. The very first scene consists of a fade shot from the film distribution to an ocean with a slow ship and fog. The fog adds to the thriller aspect of the trailer and adds to the mystery. The music also helps as it's slow paced and really does help with the mystery.
We then get an idea of where the movie is going to be set by the narrative given by one of the actors who we know as Leonardo Di Caprio and but the number of cuts which resemble the narrative including an establishing shot of the mental hospital and also how dangerous it is via a close up of security guards.
The unique selling point that is used in this trailer is firstly the lack of movies within this genre which will give additional interest towards the movie as it's uncommon. Furthermore, the director is really shown out as it says that it's "a Martin Scorsese Picture," and he is well renowned for his previous successes such as The Goodfellas which received a rating from IMDB of 8.8/10 which just shows how successful he's become.
I believe that it's the psychological aspect that sells this trailer and is really shunned out by the some of the mental patients that are shown. A shot/Reverse/Shot is used when Leonardo and the mad lady is looking at each other and it really gets the audience intrigued, especially as it looks like she has ripped out the majority of her hair.
As the pace increases in the trailer, so do the number of cuts which really makes it difficult to understand what's going on but it still really grips you. This is also to do with the sound. All these factors put in one really brings out the thriller genre and is my favourite trailer that I have watched in comparison to all of the other trailers. These cut shots happen so quickly that you don't even have time to think, you wont even think that this will occur when there is one of the slowest starts that I have seen in trailers.
The title is very bold in a white colour with a black background. This really shuns out the title. Furthermore, the title looks rather rough and rushed which supports the pace of the trailer at the time. You can also identify the thriller genre slightly in this title. The colour of the title isn't pure white whereby we see shade of black within it. This adds to that thriller feel. Despite the black shade within the title, it still stands out and really catches the audiences attention due to the pure white sections of colour within the title. we witness a very fast paced scene prior to the title which is followed by a slower pace after the title for the first two seconds. This teaches me how the introduction of a title can change or even dictate the pace of the entire genre. The title is right at the end of the trailer and helps the audience remember it with support from that fast paced scene just before the introduction of the trailer.
There are constant questions asked about the type of role the actors such as Leonardo Di Caprio plays and always keeps the audience guessing. Although the storyline is rather easy to identify, we witness a change in the characters attitudes which shows the psychological aspect of the trailer. Furthermore, we witness a lot of confrontational looks between the mental patients and Di Caprio which makes the audience feel that they recognise each other through their facial expressions.
Overall, I have learnt a lot from this trailer and how to dictate the pace of the movie with camera cuts and also with the sound. The genre of the movie is different and so it tells me that if we have a genre which has a scarcity of movies within it, than there are less rules which go with it and so if we were going to have a less recognised genre, we will have more freedom.
The Hangover Part 111 Trailer Analysis
I am now going to analyse the hangover part 3. This movie is the last of the sequel and was released in 2013. It is predominantly a full on comedy movie, it budgeted $101 million and has mad a net profit of almost $250 million. This shows that it was rather successful but there are other trailers that I have analysed which made a higher net profit without spending as much. That being said, I haven't analysed a movie which genre is only comedy and so I can't fully comment on its success as low net profits may be a trend for this movie.
The first thing I have identified straight away is the lack of content within the movie as we don't know who is getting married in this movie or why they are in Las Vegas. We go get a close up on the famous sign of Las Vegas which is what the trailer is trying to say about where this film is located. Furthermore, this is as effective as an establish shot even though this trailer also uses this as well. The movie is more established with the close up of the sign.
The unique selling points are constantly shunned out through this trailer. Firstly, this is the success of the other two movies and the second is the star studied line up of actors. The most obvious being Bradley Cooper which the camera focuses on a lot in the first half of the movie. Bradley Cooper has made a number of highly rated movies including Limitless and the Silver Linings Playbook. Furthermore, there is a certain individual who had played cameo roles in both hangover movies but had proved to be highly successful and he is briefly shown in this one which will also gain the audiences attention. This individual is known as Mr Chow.
We know this movie for it's crazy storyline's all based around the night before the wedding but in this movie, it starts of with what looks like a funeral and one of the characters singing. The costume worn makes me feel this as everyone is wearing black and the camera pans around the cars which are also black. Furthermore, one of the main characters that are singing who is known in the movie as Alan is given prevalence straight away as he is the first character that we see and thus tells us that this specific hangover movie will be based around him.
As I said earlier, this trailer suns out one of the unique selling points which is the success of the other two movies. The do this by the captions. We get more information about this being the final movie in the hangover series than the movie itself which shows just how successful movies can be just via gaining a reputation. An example of this is the paranormal activity movies which was hugely successful in the production of its first movie which then contributed to the success of the others. The way this trailer shows this off is through the captions which are fairly spread out throughout the trailer. It has captions such as "the epic conclusion" which will gain the audiences attention and is the main way in which they are trying to sell the movie.
The title is introduced earlier than I have seen in the other trailers that I have analysed yet it still is near the end. The fact that it is a trilogy is really shunned out to show the success of this movie. It is the first part we witness of the title whereby the camera effectively cuts the screen into three identical parts which shrinks and says part three. This shows that movies with a high reputation shows the importance of its previous successes as much if not more than the actual title of the film. This is because people will know what the film is called due to its previous successes. It also shows the break up of the storyline to one of the scenes that will sell the trailer at the end of the Girraffe which shows me how I can dictate the storyline with the introduction of a title. Despite this, the trailer osn't as helpfull for me because we will be producing a trailer for a brand new idea as opposed to a successful movie.
Overall, I have learnt how the success of other movies can really influence this movie and so I can't take much away from this trailer as it really focuses on its unique selling point. We of course are producing a trailer from scratch and thus this isn't as helpful. Despite this, this trailer has shown me how we can use a close up of a particular place which has a lot of social popularity and can be identified by the majority of the public rather than using an establishing shot as this is used very frequently in almost every movie yet I feel as if it doesn't need to. For example, If I done a close up of Big Ben, I would feel as if it would be much more effective than an establishing shot of London as almost everyone in Western and Eastern society's know of Big Ben and I know this as I live in a Western Society but I am from an Eastern Background.
Pirates of the Caribbean- Curse of the Black Pearl Trailer Analysis
Pirates of the Caribbean was released in 2003 and was the first movie in what was to become a trilogy. Its budget was $140 million and it went on to make a net profit of $510 million. Its genre is very much an adventure fantasy film.
The trailer starts off very gloomy but the storyline is introduced straight away and is easily identifiable that the pirates require the Aztec gold pieces. This is also identifiable by the voice-over narrative. The prevalence is mainly given to two characters during the first half of the trailer. This is one of the pirates. He is given prevalence as it's his voice that the audience is listening to and the other is Kiera Knightly who has the majority of the camera time in the first half of the movie. The camera fades from when she is a child to an adult and on both occasions, she is holding the piece of Aztec gold which shows that she is going to be one of the main characters within the movie.
We get introduced to the main storyline further on in the trailer. This is that they must rescue Kiera Knightly who had got abducted by pirates. This storyline is introduced by Kiera Knightly's lover who says " They have captured Elizabeth," which is followed by the main character who is Captain Jack Sparrow who has to help save her.
The use of clothing is quite important in this movie because it tells the audience about the times that this was produced in. There is no visible electricity but only fire on a stick when it's nigh time which also shows how the lighting has told the audience about . Furthermore, the language used is also quite historic as shown by one of the pirates saying " Hello Poppet."
Overall, throughout the movie, Captain Jack Sparrow is given the most prevalence in the trailer as we see most of him and also hear his voice the most as well. As soon as Jack Sparrow is introduced, the level of action increases dramatically along with the pace of the non-diegetic sound. We then see different sectors of action scenes for a fairly long time which tells the audience that not only is there a sub-genre but there is also a lot of action.
Towards the end of the trailer, the audience identifies that the task in hand gets a lot more harder as the pirates cannot be killed because they are cursed. This will also gain the audiences attention. A lot of action scenes are added in this trailer but the fantasy really comes out towards the end of the trailer. This trailer starts off with a lot of fades, mist and dissolving effects which make you feel as if this trailer won't give much away but slowly the trailer becomes much clearer and towards the end we actually get more information than what other trailers offer us. I feel this is because it has got a wide target age range including young kids so it offers a lot of information for the kids to understand. This is also similar to the Movie Grown Ups which also talked about the storyline in detail.
The title really appeals to the younger target audience due to the gold font and the pirate skull in the background which doesn't make it ook serious. the word Pirates is the text is essentially the biggest part in the title giving it most prevelence. This word has the most connotations to almost all types of audiences and is the main word that will gain the audiences attention. The background is a picture of the Union Jack telling the audience where the characters fome from or which countries will play a part of it.
Overall, I feel as if there is possibly too much that is going on in this trailer but the way in which they narrated the storyline makes it easy to understand and is very effective. This really makes me think closely about what sort of dialogue I must include in my trailer. As this trailer shows; a voice-over may not be required if the dialogue is used effectively. The use of special effects is also very evident in this trailer and is shown as a unique selling point in its own right and this is why they are constantly used in the trailer.

Fast and Furious 6 Trailer Analysis
Fast and Furious 6 was released in 2013 and had a budget of $160 million. It has made a net profit of $628 million which shows just how successful it was. Ultimately, what I've learnt from my research is that you only make sequels if your previous films have been highly successful and Fast 5 made as much money. It gained a rating of 7.2/10 which showed that it was a rather good movie. This movie is classed as a thriller although it does have a lot of sub-genres. This is one thing that is common with all six of the Fast and Furious movies.
The trailer starts straight away of an establishing shot of where Dominic Toretto is currently living. The audience find this out when the Rock says " This is what $100 million buys." This is followed by a sex scene. This just tells the audience that he had settled down which starts off by following Todorov's theory. we also see an over the shoulder shot of Dominic Toretto which re-enforces the fact that he had settled down. The disruption occurs when the Rock comes into the trailer. We also see another establishing shot of London just after the initial conversation between Dominic and The Rock, First the camera is focusing on a plane which tells the audience that he is flying out, then we see Tower Bridge and Big Ben which tells the audience that most of this movie is going to be set in England.
This trailer is one of the longest in terms of its length that I have analysed, and there is constant action which is a very close sub-genre along side the thriller. There are constant explosions as well as gun shots which will catch the audiences attention. The storyline is fully introduced to the audience in this trailer which gives the audience a very good idea of what this movie is actually about. Despite this I feel as if the audience wont even be listening to the storyline said by the Rock as you just get indulged by this huge quantity of action which this trailer shows and it doesn't seem to stop as soon as the non-diegetic sound starts. The storyline officially begins just after the film distribution company's name goes off. I have seen this pattern with the majority of the other trailers I have analysed and it really makes me think that it's vital we put our film distribution company name in the right place in order to have our trailer running smoothly.
The evil character, Owen Shaw is only shown in the night in this trailer. This adds levels of mysteriousness and danger to this character. Furthermore, we get a lot of information about the storyline but we don't really learn anything about Dominic's opposition. They did give a lot of information out for what is just a trailer so then needed to retain some information to build suspense for the movie as the audience would want to know who this bad character is after viewing the trailer.
Fast and Furious 6 uses all of its Unique Selling points in this trailer. Firstly we get introduced with a star studied line up of actors but the first two actors that we really see is Dominic and The Rock. The reason I feel The Rock is there early although not being a relevant as other characters is because he has a huge fan base due to both his successful wrestling and acting career. The other Unique Selling Point is the fact that they have had huge success in their previous movies. This movie is very much based around their previous movies so they are trying to show people how good their other films were and so this film will be as good. Furthermore, a character that died in one of the previous fast and furious's; Letty was actually alive and this ultimately shows the thriller genre. This trailer makes the movie feel as if there is one storyline followed by two or three smaller ones as there is just so much that is going on.
We do witness an enigma in this movie whose name is Letty. We don't see her speak yet she is given a lot of prevelence in the trailer through a lot of theconversations in the trailer being related around her and also the use of the camera zooming in on her picture with a black and white effect really emphasises that she is going to be an influential character. We do witness her a lot in the trailer but we never hear her speak which teaches me how to include an enigma type character in our trailer.
The title is the last piece ofinformation we obtain from this piece of text and just prior to the title, we winess a car flipping and on fire. This really shuns out the genre of action. Furthermore this will gain the audiences attention and re-enforces the target audience to go and watch this movie. This car scene will really make the audience aware and gain their attention which ultimately means that they will remember the title even better. Ultimately Fast 6 is a movie which has established itself within its genre and so I feel the title isn't as relevent for them in comparison to those movies that are producing their first one. This does tell me that having a scene that will catch the audinces attention prior to the title will make the audience remember the title more.
Overall, this trailer has proven to be a huge success due to the huge quantity of information included in what is a 3 minute clip. This really makes me think how much content I should include in my trailer but it really does depend on the genre that I'm picking. Again, this trailer shows that the initial storyline begins after the film distribution sign which is definitely one thing I am looking to implement into my movie. Moreover the way in which it sells it's unique selling points are particularly interesting as they are spread around the trailer and so it really makes me think where I would like to put my Unique Selling Point in order to distinguish my movie among others in the best possible way.
Men In Black 3 Trailer Analysis
Men In Black 3 was released in 2012 and had a huge budget of $215 million making a net profit of $419 million so it can be said that this movie was highly successful. The previous Men in Black films were also seen as hugely popular. I have already shown how movies that have had success previously don't really want to change much about the movie and the example I can give is the American Pie- The Reunion which was adamant to show that the actors and their mannerisms were still the same. This is the fist Sci-Fi movie that I am analysing so it will be interesting to see whether there are similarities between other film trailers.
The trailer starts of with an introduction of the characters and who they are. A voice-over is used as a narrative in this trailer but this is the first trailer which uses one of the actors as a voice-over. We know that it's one of the actors as the first thing he says is "Who are we." The trailer grips you straight away from this moment onwards. We get introduced to a weapon alongside the main character straight away and it really shows the audience that there will be a lot of action which is the sub-genre of the movie. The fast paced cut shots at the beginning really gets the audience hyped straight away. We then get introduced into the Sci-Fi genre with the introduction of the Aliens. It shows three different Aliens in the space of a couple of seconds which is also telling the audience that there is a lot of Sci-Fi involved as well.
The pace of the trailer seems to slow down during the middle of the trailer and then changes dramatically again, it does this constantly throughout the trailer. This tells the audience that the movies pace is going to change like a roller-coaster. The trailer doesn't really show off any of its action scenes yet uses sudden camera changes along with the non-diegetic sound in the background to really set the tempo of the trailer. All the other action movies tend to dictate the pace of the trailer through action scenes such as the Expendables and Django Unchained; that is how they built excitement for the movie whereas this trailer only really used cameras cuts, movement and sound which teaches me that showing off the genre isn't important when setting the tempo but you can excite the audience using sound and camera.
The only piece of action was when Will smith fell of the building and a very effective point of view shot was used. It feels to me that the producers of this trailer didn't want to give much away and yet this point of view shot was enough as it worked so well. It felt as if you were actually falling onto a taxi. At the end of the trailer it says "In 3D," which may have been why this scene had been used as it would get the audience thinking that if it felt so realistic in 2D, then imagine how it will feel in 3D.
I feel that there are two unique selling points within this movie. The first one being the star actor that is Will Smith who has won a countless number of awards and is the first face we see as he is probably the most popular actor amongst the cast. The second is the success of the other two movies making the Men In Black brand well established. I was a bit surprised that I couldn't find anything that referred back to the other two successful movies whereas a similar movie in the sense that it had past success; American Pie- The Reunion really shunned off the fact that it had previous success.
We really notice Will Smith as the main character throughout the trailer and we can also identify the bad character. Despite this, The narrative is done by agent K who can be noticed as an important character but there is a lot of mysteriousness surrounding him and this is supported when he says "We are no-one" which shows that he is trying to be a mysterious character. The way in which they make Agent K seem mysterious is by giving him minimal dialogue as the audience hardly sees him talk.
The title is brought in rather uniquely as just before it, we witness Will smith falling off a large building which really gains the audiences attention. The title is in extra large font and covers the majority of the page and so it will gain the attention of the audience.
One thing I can really take away from this trailer is the way that it dictated the pace of the trailer by basically the sound and camera movements. This trailer has really made me understand the vitality of a soundtrack and how it should be able to narrate a story by itself.
Paranormal Activity Trailer Analysis
Paranormal Activity was released in 2009, and was considered as hugely successful. It only budgeted an incredible $15000 to produce which required double and triple checking to check that this figure is correct. It has made a profit of $193 million which just shows how successful they were. This is the trailer for the first movie that they had produced but they have later on produced a number of movies on top of this,
This trailer is very unique as we witness a real life audience viewing the actual movie. This was completely different and new and so the audience would have feel intrigued and drawn in. As soon as the film distribution company; paramount is shown, then the movie actually begins. The camera shot used to view the trailer is a kind of long distance shot co the trailer can be seen but it also reminds the audience that the trailer is actually being filmed in a cinema .
The lighting is consistently dark in this trailer to re-enforce that the trailer is of a horror genre and also reminds the audience that they are in a cinema. Throughout the trailer, during the scary parts, the camera quickly cuts to the audience in the cinema to show their reactions and this will also draw the actual target audience in.
The unique selling point is shown very cunningly yet is there from the start to the end of the trailer. This is the camera type. The camera quality is poor but that is because the producers wanted them to be. Furthermore this was the reason why they didn't have to spend much in the production stage of this movie as they were using cheap cameras in comparison to the ones used by other movies which cost thousands each. This is emphasised in the trailer when the Male Character says "High Def (Definition) Camera, On,"which shows the camera being used is simple and the audience will really be experiencing the movie as if they are an additional person in the house.
The female character is given most prevalence right at the beginning of the trailer just after the film distribution company "Paramount" goes by and this is done by the man camera looking at her. During this time, it seems as if there are two cameras when there is a shot/reverse/shot used to view the conversation. This also introduces the secondary character who is the man.
The camera movements are never smooth and this helps to build the tension and remind the audience that he is carrying the camera at all times. The camera movements get quicker and quicker as the non-diegetic sound gets introduced. As the sound gets louder, there are more paranormal events which is followed by cuts to the audience getting scared and jumping.
This trailer really tries to sell itself via the audiences faces to the horror scenes but it also contains the reviews by critics and reviews such as "the scariest movie of all time" will easily sell the movie to the public. Furthermore right at the end, when you think the trailer is over, we suddenly see a man fly into a camera and this may have been added to tell give the audience a final push to go and watch the movie. This is the only time that we really see the movie in the trailer in full screen as almost all of it was filmed as if we were in the cinema but this quick transition would catch the audience by surprise and really have them gain a memory of the trailer which is the real purpose of a trailer.
Similar to The Devil Inside which I have analysed earlier, the title is quite plain but we witness an effect on the title with the sound of a camera being distorted. This is how paranormal activity is trying to make the audience remember this trailer. Furthermore the background is plain black and this really emphasizes the title. Just before the title, we witness a character being thrown into the camera and I believe that the title was put here because that specific scene would have gained the audiences attention. After the title, we see something for less than a second but if it is noticed by the audience, then they will remember the trailer if the haven't already.
The target audience will get drawn in through the camera types but ultimately by the mysteriousness and the horror scenes that this trailer entails. We don't really gain a lot of information about the main characters. this adds to the level of suspense that this trailer was trying to build which ultimately will make the horror scenes seem more horrific in peoples perceptions than they actually might be. So the Horror scenes are also the other factor which will attract their target audience of old teenagers and young adults.
Overall, I feel as if there is a lot to learn from this movie and how making a horror trailer may be the easiest yet most effective. In my first year of AS media studies where we had to do the opening two minute of a movie, we were encouraged to stay away from Horror movies as they have slow starts but this year we are getting told that a horror trailer could be quite easy and I have to say that I too agree. More specifically about this trailer, the use of camera is one that I can't forget as it was done so effectively. Paranormal Activity has been so successful with such a small budget so I'm sure that I will keep on reverting back to this trailer when we are shooting ours.
American Reunion Trailer Analysis
I am now going to analyse American Pie- The reunion. The Movie gained a rating of 6.8/10 and its trailer is very much an Adult Comedy. It was released in 2012 and is the last movie of the American Pie series. It already had an advantage as its previous films have been highly successful and so has this one. It budgeted $50 million and made a net profit of $184 million which just proves its success. Furthermore, You could class it as more of a success because its budget was quite low and it made a huge turnover. A comparison could be The Expendables which Budgeted $80 million and made a net profit of $200 million and so only made $16 million more with an additional budget of $30 Million.
The storyline starts straight away and this is supported by the film distribution company coming up at the beginning. I have noticed that a common theme that the storyline always begins straight after the film distribution company. Trailers that support this Are The Amazing Spider Man and Expendables among many others.
Straight away the Main Characters are introduced when the cameras first shot is a close up of a picture of the couple. The comedy genre is also introduced with the non-diegetic soundtrack of R Kelly's "Bump and Grind" is in the background and we hear the diegetic sound of the bed moving which will just give the audience certain ideas. The Camera then pans around very cleverly onto the bed and it isn't what the audience will think. This will draw the audience in straight away as it shows comedy straight away. As the camera pans around there is emphasis on clothes on the floor which just re-enforces the audiences al thoughts and so this adds to the comedy.
After the first scene, the pace of the trailer seems to speed up to try and introduce the other important characters yet still giving main prevalence to the main character as it always refers back to him. The trailer then just keeps on getting quicker and quicker as well as the soundtrack in the background. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's building up to something but it just shows that there is a lot packed into this movie.
The producers of this trailer try their best to emphasize that they may have grown up, but their mannerisms still remain the same. This is supported by them saying that "they have grown up .... but they haven't settled down," which re-enforces that the audience will still see the content which they expect from the other movies as it has been very successful in other movies so they are telling the audience that they have tried to change as little as possible.
They show a specific scene where they are at a College party. This uses up quite some time of the trailer but I feel as if this is important because they are trying to show again that not much has changed as most of the American Pie movies have been set when the main characters were in college or university. The character known as "Stiffler" is also wearing clothes that could be associated with the class of 99 and this again shows that the producers are trying to carry on the legacy of the trailer.
The title is right at the end which supports my initial thoughts of where I will be putting my title in our trailers. The background of the title is white which makes the title stand out. We see two different shades of white which makes the title stand out more as the pure white section is directly behind the title. The font is very bold and in the middle of the page thus given most prevalence. The title is put between two different scenes and is used to separate different scenes with each other. Although most of the trailers I have analysed have the movie title right at the end, there tends to be one final push to sell the movie to add a tiny clip just after the title which I believe is put in place to make the audience remember the movie and characters.
There is very little I can take from this trailer as it is really emphasizing it's Unique Selling Point which is it previous successes and so it tried to build from this. Our trailer is a one off so we don't have any success to build on but it is helpful in the sense that they narrated the story through their text and is quite an effective way to tell a story and rather easy as well. This trailer does in fact re-enforce a lot of my initial thoughts about the title but it also teaches me how a title can separate two different scenes but still giving them both the same prevalence.

The Expendables film trailer, Magazine Cover and poster Analysis
The expendables was produced in 2010 and gained a good rating of 6.5/10 from IMDB. It budgeted $80 million and mad a net profit of almost $200 million which sows that it was quite successful. I felt as if the movie was very exciting and packed with action plus at the time, it was highly anticipated due to all the recognized stars that played in this film. Suprisingly, Django Unchained had a higher budget than this and yet this had more action packed into it plus it used different locations. This may mean that Django spent more on advertising and thus was more successful. Overall, Django spent $100 million which is $20 million more than the expendables and the Expendables have more stars in it.
The trailer starts off very dark and it is filmed at night which gives this specific trailer the sense of mysteriousness. This is supported with the non-diegetic sound in the background which also adds to this. We see fade shots of the motorcycles followed by an extreme close up of a specific motorcycle which has the logo of the expendables. The reason it first shows a number of motorcycles is to tell the audience that the expendables is a group of people.
This Trailer consists of a narrative which is a voice-over. The only other trailer that I have analysed which also has a voice over was grown ups. A film such as Grown ups having a narrative is understandable as it's target is a family audience so a voice over will make it more understandable to all ages. Whereas, I believe that a voice over is used in the expendables to give an old fashioned film as older trailers would tend to have voice overs in comparison with the modern era so the expendables wanted to show that they have a rather historic line-up and they did so by using a voice-over.
I believe that this movie trailer really shuns its unique selling point more than any other movie. This movie consists of some legends of the action genre who can all be seen in the trail. It's got actors such as Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarznegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone among many more. Having watched the movie, I know that both Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarznegger play very mediocre roles yet they are given as much time as some of the other expendables members. The reason I feel they wanted to include these characters in their trailer is because they are huge so it will attract additional interest in the movie.
Action is almost introduced straight after you get a quick glimpse of each characters. They are introduced via quick fades and only half of their face is showing which adds to their dark and mysterious theme. you see explosions and gun shots constantly which just shows how action orientated they want this movie to seem.
A typical theme that I have identified from these action trailers is that the storyline or plot actually begins after the film institution name. The action movies tend to show action before the storyline to gain the audiences attention. This is also shown in the Expendables as we see the explosion but we do also get introduced to the characters as well.
The use of sound is consistent but I believe that the sudden pieces of text which comes in such as " A job that nobody wanted" really helps sell the movie to the audience showing that it will be a difficult mission which is what the second part of the trailer is trying to emphasise.
The use of camera shots is much more evident in the second trailer as opposed to the first. We first have an establishing shot of the Island in question which tells the audience where the majority of the movie will be set. This is followed by a quick snapshot of the money which they will achieve if the succeed in this mission. The effect on the money suddenly changes to Black and White which gives a lot of prevalence to the money. This is the shot which really gives an indication of the job roles of these expendable members and the first time I have seen this trailer, I got the impression that they were hired assassins. There is also a very simple shot/reverse/shot used when Stallone is talking to Schwarznegger in the church and this suggests that they are rivals. This was a really clever section to include because it would make the audience believe that they will face each other in the movie and that's why the shot/reverse/shot was so successful but obviously I know that Schwarznegger didn't appear again in this expendables movie. This really tells me a bit about the way in which trailers try to sell their movies and can be seen as misleading information but it is ultimately there to make films successful. A movie which did this and one that I've analysed was the Devil Inside but their trailer was highly successful.
The target audience for this trailer is very much drawn in by the unique selling point which is the huge quantity of stars that are previewed but also the number of action scenes within a short trailer will definitely gain the audiences attention. Furthermore the trailer tends to play on the lighting a fair bit which is also complemented by the sudden sound of gun shots and explosions which are ultimately a means of gaining their target audiences attention.
We witness the title "Expendables" for a very short period of around 2 seconds. Despite this; the title still leaves a lasting expression as due to the way it stands out. This trailer stick with the "Dark" concept more or less throughout the trailer with a few exceptions where this is one of them. The light in the background really does leave a lasting expression but the screen is black just before and after the title which emphasises the title and is something that I am thinking of doing in my trailer.
Overall, I believe that this trailer has taught me a lot on how to sell a trailer to the audience. This is by feeding potential ideas to the audience which will ultimately gain the interest of the audience. Furthermore, the way in which they tried to sell their unique selling point really showed me that for our trailer, we should try to show off our unique selling point as quickly as possible. There has been a lot to write about this trailer yet I feel as if other trailers offered more information about the movie but that is one of the benefits of producing a action trailer.
Here is the Empire magazine front cover for the Expendables. It was released in 2010 and the genre of this movie is action. Straight away we see the Unique Selling Point which is the star studied acting line-up. The magazine consists of 3 characters as the central image and all three of these actors have become a success as individuals and so each character will gain their own audience to gain an interest in this movie.
The background is completely full whereby no white is visible. There is an explosion behind the characters which really emphasises the genre of the movie itself and really makes the magazine stand out. Furthermore, there is the usage of props whereby the most evident being the gun which also shows the genre of the movie. The fact that Stallone is smoking a Cigar shows that he isn't scared of explosions or guns which can make the audience have a slight idea of the storyline and the fact that they are hired assassins.
The three characters are all wearing as well as their props which are also black. I feel that this is the case to make these expendables characters look secretive but also gives nothing away. I believe that they are also wearing black to make the background stand out.
There is a little but effective effect on the logo whereby there are orange sparks from the fire overlapping it which makes the magazine feel more real and almost 3-D like. Furthermore, The three characters are looking directly at the audience with a serious look telling the audience that they are fighting for something. The prop in Bruce Lee's hand emphasise the fact that this movie is of an action genre.
This magazine cover surprisingly has a lot going on in regards to text and what's included in the magazine. I feel that this particular magazine cover can get away with it though as the explosion in the background really makes the centralised image stand out more than any other magazine cover that I have analysed and so they can afford to insert additional information and attempt to sell the magazine even more.
The target audience will be drawn into this magazine front cover of the unique selling point which is how famous the actors on the cover are and also the explosion in the background which will ultimately make this magazine shine out next to all the other magazine covers. The target audience will also gain interest because of how secretive the characters seem and this will make the go and research the movie.
When looking at the characteristics of these three characters, is seems like Stallone; who is in the middle seems the most mysterious as he has the most props consisting of a watch, glasses and a cigar which means that he is giving away no facial expressions and thus the audience can't really take much from him. Despite this, he is given most prevalence as he is at the front, middle and looks the biggest out of the three. When looking at Jet Li (On the Left); he looks the weakest as he is carrying the gun. This is supported as he looks the smallest in comparison to the other two. Jason Statham on the right gives nothing away but he looks rather strong.
Overall, this Magazine front cover has taught me how to differentiate our magazine covers from others through the explosion and how two colours can make the cover stand out. Furthermore I have learnt that making people wanting to know more is the objective of these covers and so putting minimal information such as expendables facial expressions makes the audience want to search around for more information about the movie. This cover also shows how to offer levels of prevalence if you have more than one important character and how I can use props to make one character seem stronger or weaker than the other.
Here is the Poster of the Expendables movie which is very much similar to the magazine cover but a lot more simplistic in the sense that its sole purpose is to promote its movie whereas the magazine front cover had a lot of information around it which reduced the reverence of that front cover for that specific film. This is one similarity that I have noticed in all of my posters; that text is kept to a minimum as posters are more of a collectors item that can be hung up in your house. The size of the font of the title on the poster is considerably smaller in comparison with the magazine front cover which supports the fact that text should be kept at a minimum and cover as little space a possible within the poster. I believe that the cover had such a big title so the audiences attention would be firmly fixed of the expendables as opposed to the other movies that empire was trying to promote along the bottom of the magazine front cover.
This poster really shuns off its unique selling point which is its famous line up of stars as it shows seven actors who have won awards whether it be in Hollywood or UFC all around the world. The font of these actors names are in black which really makes them stand out thanks to the explosion in the background. Although it may be one of the smallest pieces of text within this poster, it will be amongst the first pies of information to be identified by the audience and this really shows how imperative it is to set your text in the right area to gain the audiences attention.
There is a sub-title on the top of the poster which helps tell the target audience and the genre of the move. Firstly, the genre is shown quite simply as the word "Action" is used. This will re-enforce to the audience that the movie is going to be an action film which they would have guessed if they had seen the cast. Moreover the target audience will get attracted via the use of the word "Awesome." This word is mainly used by teenagers and young adults thus this poster will appeal to those two groups. Also this word can be seen as to be part of popular culture as you probably wouldn't see someone from high culture saying the word awesome. This then tells me that they are aiming this move for the upper/lower middle classes.
I have already stated the age range of the target audience and now I will state the gender that this movie will side to thanks to the poster. I believe that this movie is predominantly aimed at a male audience. This is because the centralised image on this poster consists of three serious looking men. Some could argue that this will attract more of a female audience but their target audience is of a considerably younger age than these three men. Furthermore the use of props such as guns and cigars are ones which are associated with males through the media along with the explosion in the background which finalises the fact that this poster and the movie itself is aimed at mainly a male audience..
Overall this poster has taught me how to aim my poster and trailer not only to a specific age, but a gender as well. Furthermore how the use of sub-titles can really attract your target audience whereby the use of language can be a clinical factor. Moreover, how the use of language can also attract a certain class. As my movie will be based around a lower class boxing area in England, the language that will be used is going to be rather Lower Class with a hint of a Cockney accent and so if I can incorporate a Cockney word within our poster, then it will clearly tell the audience who our movie will be aimed for. Also, how the use of colours can make some items stand out more than others which is on factor that I will really have to think long and hard about for our film poster.
Comparison between Trailer, Magazine Cover and Poster.
The first point of comparison which I have identified between all three is the common theme of not giving much away. this is done in the trailer as the lighting is dark for the majority of the trailer. The Magazine front cover and poster use the same technique to follow this theme. This is done from the plain facial expressions given by the three characters in the central image I which they give off as little information as possible.
Another point of comparison is that the unique selling point is vital for this movie and is shunned out in all of the three types of advertising. The unique selling point is how famous the main characters are which they try to sell in similar ways but it shows me how powerful a unique selling point can actually be and makes me think about the unique selling point that we should have in our movie as I feel that a unique selling point is one of the crucial factors that leads to how successful the movie is ultimately going to be and helps differentiate the movie in question to any other movie on the market.
The magazine front cover and poster have exactly the same centralised image yet I feel that they are giving away a lot of information that differs from each other. For example, I have learnt that the poster is normally aimed at just the one movie whereas a magazine cover promotes a number of movies but gives one more prevalence. That being said, it seems to me that that a magazine front cove is more important than a film poster as a magazine front cover will attract a wider audience as it offers a lot of information. Despite this, the trailer is probably most important for a movie success as it will be shown on television and thus be watched by a huge audience. This is why Trailers are probably the most expensive method of advertising. All three though have their own purpose and this analysis has taught me a lot.

Django Unchained Trailer Analysis
Django Unchained was released in 2012, it budgeted $100 million and made a net profit of almost $325 million thus is considered as a huge success. This trailer very much follows Todorov's theory of Narrative structure:
The trailer starts of with a really slow paced non-diegetic music in the background which ultimately gives the trailer a fairly slow start. This is followed by long distance shots of the same group of people walking. The black people were in shackles and the white people on horses with specific prevalence going to one man as he gets the only close up among the long shots surrounding it. The black people wearing the shackles really give a first indication on what this film is actually about, where and when it's set.
We get introduced to the main character when he is given most prevalence on the screen. This is around the 38 second mark where the background is dark as its night time so there is more emphasism on him being the main character and the other black prisoners being irrelevant.
The movie is an action movie and the trailer is also packed with action. The first piece of action occurs with a very fast and effective shot/reverse shot and I believe this makes Django and his partner look dangerous.
In this trailer, Django tends to conform to a stereotype of the buck as he shows the aggressive and violent streak but also subverts as he is trying to save his love thus showing that he isn't sexually aggressive.
The use of lighting in this trailer tells the story itself. The action scenes take place at all times of the day suggesting that this movie is going to be a full on action film and is supported by sounds such as a man screaming towards the end of the trailer.
The unique selling point of this trailer is shown by the first piece of text which states that it is " A New Film by Quentin Tarentino" whose films is well known for being full on action and aggressive. This piece of text tells the narrative to the audience as all Quentin Tarentino films are very similar in regards to genre. This movie doesn't say much about a storyline apart from kill the baddies and rescue the girl but the action overlooks everything.
The clothing worn by Django is very interesting as he is wearing next to nothing at the beginning and towards the end, he is wearing a suit and riding on a Horse. This is sub-verting from the stereotype of black people being poor, stupid and unsuccessful, especially in the times of the Ku Klux Klan and here you have Django who is subverting from all three of these things.
The target audience is 18 year old's and over and this trailer reaches it in a number of ways in which I have mentioned such as the unique selling point of the director and the action scenes. Furthermore we witness the Ku Klux Klan which shares a little part of the trailer and it gives the audience an indication of the times that this movie is going to be films around but more importantly, the KKK is associated with violence and murder which is why the target audience is going to be appealed by this.
Overall, This trailer has taught me a lot about content and how more action than telling the story can gain more of an interest from the audience. This movie gave its unique selling point away as soon as possible and tells me that in order to gain the attention of the audience, you must differentiate from other movies as early as possible. Furthermore, if you aren't using a voice over as a narrative then you can still tell the story via taking small extracts from the movie.

The Karate Kid Film Trailer Analysis
The Karate Kid is an action drama and was produced in 2010 and is a remake of the 1984 version. It was considered a huge success as its budget was $40 million and it grossed $359 million. One reason for its success could have been that Jackie Chan was in it and so was Jaden Smith who was already well known to be Will Smiths son but this was his firs independent movie.
The trailer starts off on an aeroplane and has some non-diegetic sound in the background. This is already trying to set the scene whereby the plane connoting that this movie is going to be set in china as the name of the aeroplane company is Air China. the camera zooms into the logo to emphasize where they are going and the soundtrack in the background can be associated with the orient.
The trailer tries its best to make Trey (Jaden) look out of place as much as it can. This can be shown by how he is always shown to be alone but this does give him the majority of prevelence and so it's easy to see who is the main character within the movie. A movie trailer such as grown ups on the hand is difficult to identify whose a main character as the camera time was shared between all actors and it had a voice-over so nobody had the majority of the prevalence.
The drama section of the genre is introduced first when Trey says that he just wants to go home and gives the audience a sense that he is experiencing a struggle and this is when you start to first gain an idea of the storyline. The action section is then introduced with Jackie Chan defends Jaden from the bullies and the camera looks up to him also giving him prevalence and power. During this action segment, the music suddenly changes to a much more up tempo beat with quick camera movements.
The sound is really interesting in this trailer and really tells the narrative itself. There is non-diegetic music in the background for pretty much the entire trailer but it feels as if the tempo changes really emphasises the trailer as a whole. When Trey says that he just wants to go home, the music in the background makes the audience feel sorry for him and when Jackie Chan tells his speech, the sound in the background is very motivating and it makes the speech feel even more motivating. They also use writing to tell the narrative such as when it says "A stranger in a new World," you get that he is moving away from home and it's written in bold writing with a black background giving extra emphasis on the writing. This also is a couple of seconds after the Air China logo so it re-enforces the audience that he is moving away from home and it gives more confidence about the storyline to the audience.
One of the unique selling points are the star studied actors but there is also another (USP) which is the additional sub-genre of Martial Arts which are very rarely made in Hollywood. Despite this, some of them have proven to be a huge success such as the Karate Kid Movies of 1984 and thus identifying that there was a demand for for Martial Arts movies. This was a huge factor to the success of the movie and is really shunned out through the trailer as there are clips shared around the trailer of Martial Arts action.
The target audience is rather mixed in this movie as the majority of the characters are young teenagers and so this tells me that the target audience is going to be of a young age but the action makes the target audience widen out much more. The target audience is mainly met through the action scenes that are shown within this trailer.
This trailer in particular follows Todorov's theory of narrative structure.
1) Trey and his family fly off to China for a new start in their lives. This is the state of equilibrium.
2) The character who is seen as evil (the bully) attacks Trey. This is the disruption of the equilibrium.
3) Jackie Chan defends Trey. He recognised the disruption.
4) Jackie Chan then trains Trey. This is the attempt to repair the disruption.
The only thing thing that isn't seen is the reinstatement of the equilibrium yet other trailers that I have analysed don't even go this far in terms of following Todorov's theory whereby the Karate Kid has included 4 of the 5 steps.
Overall, I have learnt that this movie was so successful because there was a demand in a niche market which The Karate Kid exploited and thus made it less of a risk. This trailer really tells me how to shun out a unique selling point and also how background sound can dictate the entire trailer and thus how useful of a tool sound actually can be in telling the story of a trailer. This tells me that I must get the sound right in my trailer to ensure the success of it. There are a lot of similarities offered between this trailer and the trailer that we are going to produce. This is because there are similarities in the genre of sports/ drama. Despite this or trailers are aimed at a different market and so this trailer hasn't really taught me a lot on how to appeal to my target market but it does show me how to dictate the pace of of a sports trailer and how sound is helpful to dictate the pace of the trailer. This is also helpful for us as it helps us know what type of music we should include in our trailer which we are in the process of producing ourselves.
Grow Ups Trailer Analysis
Grown Ups was released in 2010 and made a net profit of around $190 million. Its genre is Family comedy and i believe that this was the reason for its success as there isn't many family comedies around. Furthermore, there is a huge star studied line up which will also gain the audiences attention as this trailer tries to shun out there is somthing for everybody.
At the start of the trailer we witness a basketball match where the camera keeps on moving to each character quite quickly. It uses a fade action whilst moving to each character. I believe it done this because fade effects are always associated with flashbacks and past events which is what this trailer wanted to show. The team photo taken was given a black and white effect to show that it was a past memory and was quite old.
As soon as the photo is taken, the camera cuts into a established shot looking at where the location of the majority of the movie will be set; a holiday home. The established shot then starts zooming in to the location to emphasise that the movie will be based around here but then has a number of cuts which support the high tempo happy music.
In this movie, there is a narrative which is a voice over. This is the first trailer which I have analysed that actually has a voice over in the background which gives it another aspect of the non-diegetic music. I believe that a voice over was implemented because the genre is a family comedy so it will allow for all families and ages to understand it. The voice over in here helps to tell the story and introduce the characters.
There are five characters which are completely different which will gain a wider ranged audience. For example, one of the characters is black; Chris Rock who will appeal to a black audience. They also bring the black grandmother who is also appealing to a black family. An example of this is in the big Momma films which was a children's comedy and the main character was a black grandmother.
I believe that this movie gives off a fair bit of information but is mainly used to introduce the characters. The camera does fade around the different scenes but doesn't really show any of them in much detail. It shows that there is a lot of content within the movie and teases the audience that there is a lot to see within the movie. The only two clips that they showed off in detail was when they found the swinging rope and when they were in the pool. I feel as if these two clips really emphasizes its unique selling point which is its genre and a lack of films associated with it as it shows the children talking to the adults.
The font used within the trailer is quite colourful and stands out which shows that this movie is quite happy and fun. The use of texts really supplement the voice over really nicely. The title has the same font type as the entire narrative but is right at the end of the trailer and that is why we will remember the movie. The pictures in the background supports its genre of being a family movie and makes the title it self stand out.
The target audience is reached through the different ages of actors that we witness within this trailer. Furthermore, as I explained earlier, the differences between the characters is one way in which the appeal to their target audience but also the movie starts off with a flashback of the main characters as children which appeals to the younger audience.
Overall, this film has shown me a new genre and how much thought is required in regards to content and which specific parts will be extremely successful and how a narrative can explain the trailer much better and make it much more understandable to the audience. The title is right at the end once again which supports almost all of the other trailers that I have analysed as it makes it more easier to remember the title of the movie by the audience. Furthermore, this trailer shows me how different camera shots and effects connote different ideas to the audience. From this trailer, I now know how to show off a flashback. This is extremely helpful for me as the actual trailer that that my group and I will be producing is a boxing/drama movie whereby the trailer will start off with a flashback of the boxing match that our main character loses.
The Devil Inside - Trailer Analysis
The Devil Inside is a horror movie, it was released in January 2012 and made a net profit of $100 million. This can be seen as a huge success as it was quite a low budget movie only spending $1 million in the production of the movie. The movie is based around American people but the location is based predominantly in Rome, Italy.
The Trailer:
The trailer starts off with a black background and white subtitles. Straight away the trailer tries to show off it's unique selling point of it being based on a true story via showing a real life conversation of what the story is based around. Straight away, it shuns the horror genre when the female character is telling the police officer that she just killed three people. As soon as the conversation had stopped, the non-diegetic music begins. It is a very slow paced soundtrack and feels very gloomy.
Throughout the movie, the camera has certain moments whereby it doesn't feel smooth but it seems as if the viewers are watching it from someone else's point of view. I feel as if the producers purposely made the camera seem a bit rough at parts to build to the suspense. There are quite a few established shots throughout the trailer to show the different locations that are going to be used within this movie. I feel as if this was a good idea as the storyline could have got a bit confusing but the audience will understand that it's an American Movie, filmed in Italy.
The use of dialogue felt more important than the non-diegetic sound for this trailer and i feel that this is because Horror movies can be a bit confusing so it requires a simple narrative sometimes. Action movies such as The Amazing Spider-man used non-diegetic music much more as they didn't want to give too much away. The narrative it self is also shown by the live dialogue within the trailer. I feel that a voice-over wasn't used as it could have ruined the objectives that the trailer wanted to achieve as it can potentially slow down the pace of the trailer and make the horror scenes look less scary.
The camera movement as a whole is quite slow to build suspense but then the camera cuts dramatically when something bad happens. For example, around the 1:45 mark, the camera moves and cuts dramatically when the possessed lady flies into the air.
There isn't much to talk about as far as camera shots are concerned and I believe that this is because it isn't required in horror films or trailers. I will use Spider-Man again to show the comparison whereby there are a number of different shots and effects used and a lot of cuts and juxtapositions.
The trailer was a huge contribution to the success of the movie as the movie itself was deemed as a huge failure only gaining a 4/10 rating on IMDB and a shocking 2.7/10 on Rotten tomatoes this stated that this was one of the worst endings ever. Yet it managed to net $100 million? This is mainly due to of the success of the trailer which in turn made the movie highly anticipated.
The target audience for this movie is around the ages of 18-24 year old's. As this movie isn't well known like a movie like Spider-Man movie, the trailer must work harder to reach its target audience. This trailer gains the attention of its target audience by the sheer quantity of horror scenes which tells me that the horror genre approaches its target audience through content.
The title of the movie is very plain but it emphasises the background which are upside down crosses which corresponds with one of the crazy lady's bottom lip and this makes the audience remember the trailer. The title is additionally effective because of the white background which makes the black title really stand out. Moreover, there are a number of shades of white within this background but the brightest shade of white is behind the title which also makes it stand out. this shows me how even the most plain title can leave a remaining impression.
This movie trailer has taught me a huge amount about how important a trailer actually is to the success of a movie. This movie was in the top 10 for the first week but then wiped out completely. The first week was when this movie made the majority of its money due to the anticipation of it through the trailer but due to bad reviews, it didn't make any more which support my idea of the importance of a trailer. Furthermore this trailer really shows how to build suspense. throughout the movie, it feels quite slow but it's suddenly grips you with quick camera cuts and sudden changes of sound. This trailer has also taught me a lot about titles but it has also re-enforced the fact that the title of a trailer is normally right at the end. As a number of psychological experiments, case studies and meta-analysis have supported, we remember the beginning and ending of a piece of text and tend to forget the bits in the middle. This is obviously dependent on the size of the piece of text. This is why the title is at the end and helps us remember the movie for when it's going to come out.

The Amazing Spiderman Trailer and poster Review.
The Amazing Spider man (2012) is an action movie which tried to change its target audience slightly aiming it at a higher age audience. I received a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDB. The budget for this movie was $230 million and its revenue was $752 million thus making a profit of around $520 million which shows the success of the movie and the way they marketed it.
The trailer is very dark throughout and makes me think that Mark Webb; the director didn't want to give much away. This is a common theme with these action trailers. The James Bond Quantum of solace trailer also shows this in the sense that there is very little dialogue and a lot of fast paced cuts although you must understand that James Bond was aimed at a higher aged audience but there are certain similarities between the two trailers which emphasises my point of making the Amazing Spider-man squeal for more of a mature age.
The Trailer:
The trailer starts of with a night time view of the location of the movie; I believe that it was a night time established shot because the trailer wanted to build suspense which was contributed by the non diagetic music in the background but also, it didn't want to give much away. this established shout around the location seems to be panning round the the area emphasising that this location plays a huge part in the movie.
In between 10-30 seconds of the movie, there are constant fades which show that it's a flashback of the character. The gaps in between the fades are quite long which may show that this was a very old memory which is supported when the kids reflection turns into the adults reflection of Peter Parker. Furthermore, the non-diegetic sound stops when we meet the adult Peter Parker which tries to show that it was his flashback and he is the main character in the movie.
It seems as if the trailer wants to show that it actually begins after the 30 seconds mark. This is when the film distributor is shown. In regards to the Amazing Spider-Man, this is Columbia Pictures. I believe that it was put there to separate the past with the present. The fades still continue throughout the trailer which show his different personalities and give the audience an insight of his life. The title is introduced right at the end of the trailer and is complemented with the Spider-Man logo which is a spider itself. I feel that the title isn't necessary in this movie due to the connotations that their pros are associated with. For example, the spider logo itself and the spider-man piece of clothing will make the majority of the audience know what the name of this movie is.
The first half of the movie is rather slow paced with a lot of fades but the turning point is around the 1 minute 10 second mark. This could be shown by the re-introduction of the non-diegetic sound but this time, there is much more of a faster tempo which emphasises the turning point of the trailer. the sound is also complemented by the fast cuts as soon as Peter Parker got bitten.
I believe that the trailer tells a very good story and has played a part of the success of the movie. This trailer is like a book which contains two chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of Peter Parker and the second chapter is the introduction of Spider-man. The producers of the trailer have done very well in the sense that they didn't used much dialogue, yet you felt as if you got enough information about the movie. The sudden pace changes also draws the viewers in.
One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is the use of the characters point-of-view shot. This was used for around 35 seconds towards the end of the movie. This was a really impressive and clever use of shot as it really shows the action aspect of Spider-Man and it will really get the audience excited as they are seeing the action through Spider-Mans point of view.
This trailer ultimately appeals to its target audience via the unique selling point which is Spider-Man himself. This is because Spider-Man is a well known character around the world and is one which is associated with a young target audience. I feel that it achieves the interest of this target audience as the first character we see is a young Peter Parker and the modern day Peter Parker is pictured first at college as well which will appeal to the teenagers. Despite this, I feel this trailer is trying to widen its target audiences through its lighting as most of the movie is shot at night and adds an additional sense of maturity to the movie.
Overall, I believe that I have learnt a lot from this trailer. The most important thing I have learnt from this is the way in which to structure a trailer and that telling a story is vital to the success of the trailer which Spider-Man has done exceedingly well. Furthermore, getting the audience excited by the trailer will predominantly lead to the success of the trailer. Another example of this is the horror movie "the Devil Inside." It made a profit of $100,000,000 yet it was seen as a huge let down only gaining a rating of 4.1/10 on IMDB. The reason of the huge profit was the trailer which was highly rated. This just shows how important getting the audience exited through the trailer is for the success of the movie. Despite this, there are also other external factors which contributed to the success of this movie which is the "Marvel Comics" title associated with Spider-man.
Poster Review:
Here is the poster for the Amazing Spider-Man. The poster uses an establishing shot to identify the location in which this movie is going to be set. This is the background image , just behind the central image. The main focus is on Spider-Man who is the central image within the poster. This is the unique selling point for the poster and the film it self as he is already a well established character.
The background is very dark which connotes negativity and violence. this is supported by the shattered glass around the poster. This shattered glass can indicate that the city is in trouble supporting the idea of violence and complements the night sky very nicely. The background lighting is also used very cleverly as it makes the audience feel as if it is natural lighting but I feel that its main purpose is to make Spider-Man stand out as the light is shining all around him.
I feel as if the shattered glass has a number of indications within the poster. Firstly, this gives the poster much more of a 3-D atmosphere which differentiates the poster to other competitors through making it stand out and more appealing. Plus it is one of their unique selling points and can be identified as the "IN 3D" text is the only bit in red making it important and stand out. Secondly it seems as if Spider-Man broke the glass. This may mean that the glass connotes freedom for the city and Spider-Man is the one to offer it. This shows Spider-man is the hero for those who didn't know.
Now I'm going to look at the central image which is Spider-man himself. It seems as if he is addressing the audience in two ways. Firstly he is looking directly at the audience which makes the feel more involved with the poster. Secondly, he is also pointing directly to the audience which again addresses the audience. Furthermore, they wayin which he is pointing adds to the unique selling point of the movie being in 3-D.
This image also tells the audience that there is going to be a lot of action as he is flying. Moreover the action is supported by the broken glass. Historically, I know that Spider-Man is for a younger target audience but this poster shows that it is also trying to appeal to an older audience. The fact that this poster is taken at night tells me that this is much more of a mature Spider-Man movie.
The title has got the biggest font thus giving it most prevalence amongst the text. I feel this is the case because the character Spider-Man is already a well established character so the poster is trying to show this off. The majority of the text is in white which really stands out sue to the black background. This really makes me think about how relevant the use of colours are to a successful poster. Despite not being the biggest text, the text "In 3D" is also given a lot of prevalence due to being in red. It really stands out as all the other text is in white. This shows how powerful the 3D tool is to modern films to differentiate themselves to competitors.
Overall, I can take a lot from this trailer in regards to the use of space and how the poster is generally set out. This poster also makes me think about how the use of colours makes it effective as well as the relevance of addressing the audience to make them seem as if they're apart of this film.
Comparisons Between The Trailer And Poster:
I feel as if the trailer and poster tries it's best to shun out the action genre. Furthermore, they both show how important unique selling points are to the success of a film. Moreover, I can see how important it is for this film to widen their target audience. Both the trailer and poster try thier best to show more adult themes thus trying to slightly change the direction this film is trying to take now and in the future as it is part of a sequel.
